Field Sobriety Tests: Indicators of a DUI in Florida
When stopped by a Florida police officer on suspicion of driving under the influence, suspects are often asked to perform field sobriety tests. Even when a suspect is not intoxicated, these tests can be frightening and stressful. The following is an overview of what the arresting officer may be looking for when asking a suspect to perform a field sobriety test in Florida:
- Whether the suspect can smoothly follow a moving object with his eyes.
- Whether the suspect’s eyes are involuntarily jerking when moved as far to the left or right as possible.
- Whether the suspect sways while balancing on one foot.
- Whether the suspect needs to use his arms to balance while standing on one foot.
- Whether the suspect hops while attempting to balance on one foot.
- Whether the suspect puts his raised foot down when asked to stand on one foot.
- Whether the suspect can remain balanced while listening to instructions from the police officer.
- Whether the suspect begins walking before being instructed to do so.
- Whether the suspect has to stop while walking to regain his balance.
- Whether the suspect has to use his arms to balance while walking.
- Whether the suspect can properly take heel-to-toe steps while walking as instructed by the police officer.
- Whether the suspect loses his balance when attempting to turn while walking.
- Whether the suspect takes the proper number of steps he was told to take by the officer.
